Commissioned Paintings

These days I spend most of my time working with clients on commissioned works. Asked to paint something particular to suit their home, beach house, workspace, restaurant, resort…even schools, it is a fun project for all. Family portraits, often as a gift for a loved one’s birthday, anniversary or other special occasion is a regular request. Following initial discussions in my studio or via email or phone listening to ideas and requests as to subject, personalising, colour scheme, setting, canvas size etc I then send a quote and some sketches. When everyone is happy with the sketch and a deposit is paid I then move to the canvas. As the painting progresses I keep the client in the loop with regular emailed photographs and they have the opportunity to give feedback, express any concerns and I can tweak as necessary. My ultimate aim is to make sure you are completely happy with your finished artwork!

Following discussions about subject, setting, colour scheme, where it is to hang and canvas size, I send a quote and when confirmed, a sketch or two or three. Clients send photos to help me understand who is to be depicted.
The canvas is stretched and prepared with a dark background paint and any textures required.
Once we have determined a final sketch I move to the prepared canvas on the easel and charcoal in a basic outline.
When I receive a thumbs up from the client I then begin adding a painted black outline.
Moving around the studio, I always check it from every angle.
The figures begin to emerge from the canvas and the client is regularly updated by email of the painting's progress. This is where it gets really fun!
Studio visitors like to see its progress too.
Any concerns can be addressed as I paint. I can tweak, add or delete along the way. The client becomes very strongly involved in its creation.
Colours and layers are added...
Emails and phone calls will determine finer details as we go.
Even Mr Swivel (who features in my social media) likes to have his say along the way.
My paint pots tell a story of colour scheme.
The detailing progresses day by day. This painting took a couple of weeks to complete.
Patterning and in this case, paper collage are added.
Then the doggies get their turn.
Excitement reaches fever pitch as the project nears completion. Discussions are all about choosing a title for the painting (which I write on the back of the canvas), courier arrangements and where it is to hang.
Last tiny tweaks are made ... eye colours are important.
And any last minute ideas ... like adding that special necklace!
Happy with the painting I now seal and varnish it with a protective coat and let it cure for a couple of days.
Then I paint the edges black.
A hanging system is attached, title chosen and written on the back and it is signed.
Payment is received, courier arrangements are made and I professionally pack the painting.

After layers of bubble wrap, it is wrapped in sturdy cardboard, addressed clearly and courier labels affixed.
I advise the client when the painting has been picked up and its ETA. Tracking is always provided.
And it never fails to thrill me when a happy client lets me know it has arrived safe and sound.
